Daily phytate intake increases adiponectin levels among patients with diabetes type 2: a randomized crossover trial

This groundbreaking research by Pilar Sanchis, Paula Calvo, Antelm Pujol, Rosmeri Rivera, Francisco Berga, Regina Fortuny, Antonia Costa-Bauza, Felix Grases, and Luis Masmiquel reveals that daily consumption of myo-inositol hexaphosphate (phytate) significantly increases serum adiponectin and lowers HbA1c levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. The findings suggest a phytate-rich diet could combat diabetic complications effectively.... show more
Abstract
AIM: Adiponectin, a major adipokine secreted by adipose tissue, improves insulin sensitivity. Myo-inositol hexaphosphate (phytate; InsP6), abundant in cereals, legumes, and nuts, has shown beneficial properties in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: In a randomized crossover trial (n=39 T2DM), we assessed the impact of daily InsP6 intake on serum adiponectin, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β. Serum inflammatory markers, classic vascular risk factors, and urinary InsP6 were measured at baseline and post-intervention. RESULTS: Three months of InsP6 supplementation increased adiponectin levels and lowered HbA1c compared with non-InsP6 intake, with no differences in TNF-α, IL-6, or IL-1β. CONCLUSION: InsP6 consumption increases plasma adiponectin in T2DM. A phytate-rich diet may beneficially affect adiponectin and HbA1c and could help prevent or mitigate diabetes-related complications.
