Abstract
This study investigates the language ideologies and practices of Thai international students at a Chinese-medium instruction (CMI) university in China. Qualitative data reveals that Chinese serves as both a medium of instruction and a lingua franca for communication. Despite this, incongruence exists between students' language ideologies and practices, with some favoring monolingualism while engaging in multilingual practices. The study highlights implications for teaching and learning in CMI universities, advocating for multilingual awareness development, ‘respectability’ pedagogies, and translanguaging practices.
