Discover how microhybrid and nanohybrid restorative composites hold up against common Yemeni beverages in this in vitro study. Conducted by Ahlam Mohammad Al-Shami and colleagues, the research reveals that nanohybrid composites resist discoloration better than their microhybrid counterparts, with certain drinks causing more staining. Abstract
Objective/Aim: This in vitro study evaluated the color stability of microhybrid and nanohybrid restorative composites after immersion in commonly consumed Yemeni beverages for different periods. Materials and Methods: Two composites were tested: nanohybrid Tetric N-Ceram and microhybrid Te-Econom Plus. For each material, six groups of n=5 disc specimens (10 mm diameter, 2 mm thickness, A2 shade; total 30 per material) were immersed for 1 week in distilled water, qat solution, Yemeni coffee, traditional Yemeni coffee (qishr), red tea, and Dilsi cola. Color was measured by colorimetry (CIELAB), and pH of media was recorded before and after 1, 3, and 7 days. Results: Tetric N-Ceram showed less discoloration than Te-Econom Plus. Qat, coffee, and red tea caused significantly higher discoloration than Dilsi cola and distilled water (p < 0.05). The influence of low pH on discoloration depended on the colorant. Discussion: Nanohybrid Tetric N-Ceram was more resistant to discoloration than microhybrid Te-Econom Plus; qat and coffee had the highest staining effects. Conclusions: Findings inform composite selection and patient instruction regarding beverage- and habit-related staining risks.
