Abstract

This qualitative study explores healthcare workers' (HCWs) perspectives on patient disengagement from antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Khayelitsha, South Africa. Semi-structured interviews with 30 HCWs revealed that while they empathized with patients facing challenges like mental health issues and non-disclosure, many also expressed anger and frustration, citing increased workload. The study highlights the contradictory feelings experienced by HCWs and emphasizes the need for interventions to support staff and promote person-centered care.
