Abstract
'Less but better' is a pragmatic approach to tackling the sustainability challenges of meat consumption and production. This paper explores interpretations of 'less' and 'better', finding increasing use of the term in literature from Western, high-income settings. Significant meat reduction is needed, but interpretations of 'better' lack clarity and omit many sustainability themes. A shared vision of sustainable livestock systems is needed to establish principles for 'less but better' for effective decision-making.
