📰 About JournalismAI Academy

The JournalismAI Academy is a 5-week virtual program created by the JournalismAI team at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and powered by the Google News Initiative. Since its inception in 2021, the Academy has trained over 180 newsroom professionals globally.

For 2025, the Academy will select 20 participants from Sub-Saharan Africa to join a new cohort of journalists. The program aims to make AI more accessible to newsrooms and support their AI adoption journey.

🎯 Program Structure

The Academy consists of five core modules, an introduction week, and a wrap-up week. Each module focuses on a specific aspect of AI in journalism:

Module #1 → Understanding AI & Its Applications

  • Learn about practical AI tools and their applications in journalism.
  • Explore concepts like machine learning, neural networks, and natural language processing (NLP).
  • Analyze case studies and gain insights into integrating AI tools into newsroom workflows.

Module #2 → Data & Technology

  • Understand the types of data and tech infrastructure needed for AI implementation.
  • Learn about data privacy and security concerns in journalism.

Module #3 → Generative AI for Journalism: Best Uses

  • Explore generative AI tools and strategies for optimizing their use.
  • Focus on crafting effective prompts for journalistic applications.

Module #4 → Risks & Concerns

  • Address risks like bias, accountability, and transparency in AI.
  • Learn about ethical considerations and strategies to mitigate potential harms.

Module #5 → From Ideation to Implementation

  • Brainstorm and develop ideas for applying AI in journalism.
  • Participate in group exercises to create AI tools that enhance journalistic work.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Academy, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Profession: Journalists or media professionals working in a newsroom.
  • Region: Based in Sub-Saharan Africa (GMT+1 to GMT+3).
  • Language: Fluency in English is required.
  • Experience:
    • Basic understanding of AI and machine learning.
    • Affiliation with a newsroom exploring AI technologies.
    • Ability to influence the strategic adoption of AI in their organisation.
  • Technical Requirements: Stable WiFi connection for live activities.
  • Exclusions:
    • Freelancers are not eligible.
    • Journalists outside Sub-Saharan Africa or non-English speakers are not eligible.
