The Alan Turing Internship Network (TIN) connects researchers with businesses, governmental organizations, charities, and NGOs to apply their expertise in real-world challenges. The program emphasizes inclusivity and flexibility, offering options such as part-time work, remote work, and accommodations for student visa holders.

The network welcomes applications from under-represented groups, all universities in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, and individuals who have taken career breaks prior to their PhD. Applicants of any nationality are eligible, provided they have the right to work in the UK.

🎯 Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Alan Turing Internship Network, applicants must:

  • Be a current doctoral student enrolled in a university (or a recent graduate within 6 months) based in the UK or the Republic of Ireland.
  • Have the right to work and be based in the UK or Ireland, depending on the role location.
  • Be pursuing a PhD that involves methods or concepts from:
    • Mathematics
    • Statistics
    • Data Science
    • Computer Science
    • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
    • Ethics and/or Technology
    • Social Science and Public Policy (for policy internships)
  • Be able to pause their studies for the internship duration unless part-time or flexible working is allowed.
  • Obtain approval from their supervisor and university department to participate.

Note: Additional eligibility requirements may apply for specific internships and will be detailed in the role descriptions.

Steps to Apply:

  1. Supervisor Approval: Discuss the scheme with your supervisor and university department to gain approval to participate and pause your PhD if selected.
  2. Application Submission: Apply directly through the Flexigrant application system.
    • Indicate your first-choice role and optionally a second-choice role.
    • The Turing Internship Network team may suggest other roles based on your application.
  3. Details Required: Provide information about:
    • Your PhD research project.
    • Goals and interest in the internship.
  4. Role Descriptions: Carefully review the internship role descriptions on the website.
  5. Research the Organisation: Learn about the organisation offering the role, its culture, and how your skills align with the requirements. Reflect on past experiences to demonstrate your suitability for the role.

    • Applications are assessed based on the application form only.
    • Eligible applications are reviewed by the Turing Internship Network team and project leads of each organisation.
    • Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interviews (likely in mid-November). Some organisations may require online assessments prior to interviews.
    • Applicants will be notified of the outcome by the end of November.
  • Post-Selection: Successful applicants will liaise with the host organisation to sign contracts and complete security/background checks.
