Abstract
This mixed-methods study examined the link between trust and coping mechanisms during the early COVID-19 pandemic across 35 cultures. Qualitative data from 10,072 supportive messages revealed five trusted targets (God, a larger "us," country/government, science/healthcare, and those affected) and six coping strategies (interpersonal/social, religious/spiritual, acceptance, blame, wishful thinking, and strength-based). A quantitative analysis showed that individualism, cultural tightness, globalization, and pandemic severity differentially affected trusted targets and coping strategies.
