Abstract
This paper examines variations in gun culture across US states from 1998-2016. Using principal component analysis of 11 gun-related variables, three distinct cultural elements were identified: recreational, self-defense, and Second Amendment advocacy. The recreational element declined while self-defense increased; Second Amendment advocacy remained relatively stable. The study highlights the non-monolithic nature of gun culture and its regional variations.
