Abstract
This article explores the discursive construction of volunteer translator identity in Spanish NGOs using critical discourse analysis. Based on 25 semi-structured interviews, the findings reveal two contrasting identities: (1) volunteer translators who see themselves as agents of social change, possessing a strong sense of identity and social status; and (2) those who perceive themselves as interfering in a professional field, resulting in a weaker sense of identity. This highlights the undefined role of volunteer translators and the need for further research into the relationship between volunteer and professional translators.
