Abstract
This study established the superior efficacy of α-lactalbumin (ALA)-based electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds (ENs) in burn wound healing compared to other regenerative protein scaffolds. Four composite ENs (LZM/PCL, BSA/PCL, COL/PCL, and ALA/PCL) were fabricated using bovine serum albumin, collagen type I, lysozyme, and ALA blended with poly(ε-caprolactone). ALA/PCL ENs demonstrated enhanced fibroblast proliferation and adhesion, better regenerative skin tissue maturity, and comparable wound healing to a collagen sponge on a third-degree burn model. This enhanced healing was attributed to ALA's ability to promote serotonin production at wound sites. The study concludes that ALA shows greater potential for burn wound healing than other regenerative proteins within nanofibrous scaffolds.
