Abstract

This study explores how war-affected immigrants in the Netherlands relate to Dutch Remembrance Day. Semi-structured interviews with 25 immigrants from 8 countries revealed mixed emotions (sadness, longing, gratitude) and varied responses to memories triggered by the commemoration. The context of war in participants' home countries often hindered commemoration there, but the Dutch commemoration fostered social connectedness and emotional expression. The findings offer insights for counselors and policymakers aiming for inclusive societies.
