Knowledge of population distribution is crucial for various applications. However, existing assessments are limited. This study presents a multi-layered dasymetric approach combining official statistics with geospatial data to produce a European Union-wide dataset of population grids at 1 km² resolution, accounting for intraday and monthly variations. Results quantify spatio-temporal population density in large European cities, estimating daytime population in city centers to be 1.9 times higher than nighttime population.
