This review summarizes recent research on the role of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) in late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). It focuses on TREM2 structure, expression, signaling, ligands, functions, variants, and its interaction with amyloid and tau pathologies. The review also explores the relationship between TREM2 and apolipoprotein E (ApoE) and discusses the potential of TREM2 as a therapeutic target for LOAD.
