Marine heatwaves (MHWs), episodic periods of abnormally high sea surface temperature, severely affect marine ecosystems. This study uses a high-resolution Earth system model to investigate the future intensity and frequency of MHWs over Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs). Results show that future intensity and annual days of MHWs over most LMEs will remain higher than in the present-day climate, even if organisms fully adapt to long-term mean warming. Higher resolution models are crucial for accurately simulating MHWs, particularly in coastal regions.
