Abstract
This review summarizes current knowledge on human brown adipose tissue (BAT), focusing on its pathophysiological roles in energy homeostasis, obesity, and related metabolic disorders. The effects of aging and sex on BAT are also discussed. BAT, through thermogenesis, plays a role in regulating body temperature, energy expenditure, and body fatness. Clinical studies reveal associations between BAT and metabolic disorders (insulin resistance, diabetes, dyslipidemia, fatty liver) and cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, atherosclerosis).
