Abstract
This article explores how the survival tactics of the urban poor in Mexico keep them trapped in poverty. A qualitative grounded theory study involving 115 participants (75 women and 40 men) in 10 impoverished neighborhoods across three Mexican regions used observational accounts and in-depth interviews. Findings reveal that while the urban poor demonstrate resilience and hard work, their survival strategies incur significant costs, creating a cycle of poverty. The authors advocate for integrated and participatory interventions that consider the knowledge and strengths of the urban poor to effectively combat poverty.
