This study aimed to evaluate the association between plasma branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) and intrahepatic lipid (IHL) content, considering the influence of physical activity level and exercise training. A cross-sectional analysis of 1983 individuals showed a positive association between plasma BCAA levels and IHL, irrespective of physical activity. A 12-week exercise intervention in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL), and controls demonstrated that exercise reduced IHL in NAFL and controls without altering plasma BCAA levels. Therefore, exercise training-induced IHL reduction is likely independent of changes in plasma BCAA levels.
