The case for longtermism: concern for the far future as a catalyst for pro-climate action

This research examines the relationship between longtermism beliefs and climate-protective attitudes and actions. Across four pre-registered studies (N = 4451) and two supplementary pilots (N = 1858), longtermists (approximately 25% of participants) showed heightened climate change concerns, stronger support for pro-climate policies, advocacy for climate justice, and proactive contributions to environmental causes. Responsibility to future generations drove these associations. A targeted intervention boosted intergenerational responsibility and increased donations to an environmental charity. The findings suggest that longtermism beliefs can shape pro-environmental attitudes and actions, offering valuable insights for climate advocacy.
