This paper presents an improved head-sized Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) scanner characterized by low power consumption, open-source software, and an emphasis on human safety. The scanner achieves 3D single- and multi-contrast imaging at 4 Hz frame rate. System characterization includes sensitivity, resolution, perfusion, and multi-contrast experiments, along with field measurements and sequence analysis. The scanner shows potential for diagnosing conditions like ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage in unshielded environments.
