Abstract
This article analyzes the mortality burden of the COVID-19 pandemic across 569 regions in 25 European countries in 2020 and 2021, using age and sex-specific excess mortality data and Age-Standardised Years of Life Lost (ASYLL). A forecasting approach based on CP-splines revealed significant losses in most regions, with a shift in geographical patterns from initial outbreak areas to an East-West gradient in 2021. The study highlights the importance of regional analyses for understanding the pandemic's impact.
