This study investigates how social media constructs sexual deviance and violence against women in Hong Kong. Analyzing a Facebook discussion about a celebrity infidelity scandal, the researchers explore how cheating and promiscuity are framed as deviant acts, reinforcing compulsory monogamy and leading to online harassment. The study finds that punitive informal social control dominates online discussions of taboo sexual practices, further stigmatizing them and disproportionately affecting women. The authors call for updated social media measures to regulate cyber violence and promote more constructive conversations on these sensitive topics.
