Abstract
Cell-cultured meat offers a more sustainable food system. However, research is hindered by the lack of serum-free media for robust cell expansion. This study adapts a low-cost serum-free medium (B8) for bovine satellite cells by adding recombinant albumin, creating Beefy-9. Beefy-9 supports long-term satellite cell expansion (seven passages) with a 39-hour doubling time, comparable to serum-containing media. This offers a promising foundation for developing serum-free media for other species, accelerating cultured meat research.
