Second-order Citations in Altmetrics: A Case Study Analyzing the Audiences of COVID-19 Research in the News and on Social Media

J. P. Alperin, A. Fleerackers, et al.

This study conducted by Juan Pablo Alperin, Alice Fleerackers, Michelle Riedlinger, and Stefanie Haustein shows that social media discussions surrounding research are significantly more engaging compared to direct interactions with the research itself. The findings highlight the crucial role of news media in sharing research with the public, particularly in the context of COVID-19.

Abstract
This study investigates the use of 'second-order citations'—social media mentions of news coverage of research—as an extension of traditional altmetric approaches to capture the societal impact of research. Using COVID-19 research articles as a case study, the researchers demonstrate that social media engagement with news stories about research (second-order citations) was significantly higher than engagement with the research articles themselves (first-order citations). Distinct audiences engaged with first- and second-order citations, highlighting the importance of news media in disseminating research to the public.
