Record-shattering 2023 Spring heatwave in western Mediterranean amplified by long-term drought

M. Lemus-canovas, D. Insua-costa, et al.

Discover how soil moisture impacts early heatwaves in the western Mediterranean, as highlighted in this groundbreaking study by Marc Lemus-Canovas, Damián Insua-Costa, Ricardo M. Trigo, and Diego G. Miralles. Their research uncovers the crucial role of soil moisture in forecasting extreme temperatures and the conditions leading to record-breaking heat events.

Abstract
The western Mediterranean experienced an unprecedented early heatwave in April 2023, shattering temperature records. This study investigates soil moisture-temperature interactions using observations and statistical analysis. Results reveal that soil moisture deficit, coupled with a strong subtropical ridge, amplified and prolonged the heatwave. Extreme temperatures were 4.53 times less likely and 2.19 °C lower with wet soils. Soil moisture is crucial for seasonal forecasting of early heatwaves in this region.
