This paper investigates how the English-dubbed versions of the film *Monkey King: Hero is Back* (2015) reconfigured a Chinese heroic legend for Western audiences. It examines dubbing strategies using macro-level translation theories (polysystem theory and relevance theory), three translation models (causal, psycholinguistic, and neurolinguistic), and micro-level strategies (source-text and target-text oriented). The study finds that target-audience orientation in English dubbing often prioritizes standard language, constrained by linguistic and cultural differences, unlike the more dynamic and adaptive Chinese dubbing. The comparison aims to inform dubbing practices for better engagement with Western audiences.
