Abstract
Despite progress in maternal and child health, South Africa continues to face a quadruple burden of disease. This article examines how various technologies are implemented in the 'first 1000 days' of life, from conception to early childhood. It analyzes technologies such as ultrasound, cesarean sections, ECMO, and the Road to Health Booklet, highlighting how 'publics' are constituted in ways that prioritize fetal and infant health over women's health, reproductive rights, and public health safety.
