Prolonged breastfeeding protects from obesity by hypothalamic action of hepatic FGF21

V. Pena-leon, C. Folgueira, et al.

Discover how early-life factors, such as delayed weaning, can play a crucial role in preventing obesity later in life. This groundbreaking study reveals the protective effects of prolonged breastfeeding on brown adipose tissue thermogenesis and metabolic regulation, with insights from a team of esteemed researchers including Veronica Pena-Leon and Cintia Folgueira.

Abstract
Early-life determinants are thought to be a major factor in the rapid increase of obesity. This study shows that delayed weaning in rat pups protects them against diet-induced obesity in adulthood, through enhanced brown adipose tissue thermogenesis and energy expenditure. The effects are mediated by increased hepatic fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) production and tanycyte-controlled access to the hypothalamus. Prolonged breastfeeding constitutes a protective mechanism against obesity by affecting long-lasting physiological changes in liver-to-hypothalamus communication and hypothalamic metabolic regulation.
