Abstract
This study examines trends in the profile of UK registered dentists from 2000 to 2020, correlating them with policy changes. The number of registered dentists increased by 36% (11,144), with the majority (58%) being international graduates. By 2019, 28% of registered dentists qualified outside the UK. Increases were seen in UK graduates (18%), EEA graduates (214%), and those entering via the Overseas Registration Examination (621%), while those registering through bilateral agreements decreased (43%). The study concludes that international dental graduates significantly contribute to the UK dental workforce, highlighting the urgent need for research into dentist migration and retention.
