This paper demonstrates the feasibility and skill of global preseason crop yield forecasts, leveraging advances in climate forecasting. Globally, maize and wheat forecasts are skillful up to a year ahead of harvest for 15% and 30% of harvested areas, respectively, with higher skill in specific regions. Wheat forecasts remain skillful beyond 18 months in some locations. This highlights the potential for improving food security early warning systems.
