Abstract

On June 6, 2023, a large portion of the Kakhovka Dam on the Dnieper River, Ukraine, collapsed while under Russian control. Using multi-temporal Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (MT-InSAR), this study assesses pre-collapse deformations of the dam from 2017 to 2023. Results show movements on the southern side (facing the Dniprovska Gulf), compatible with several possible damage mechanisms. Deformation signals include subsidence beginning in June 2021 and horizontal (upstream) movements starting in June 2022, highlighting the value of spaceborne monitoring to detect distress and support stability assessment of critical infrastructure.
