Abstract
Recent electoral inroads by anti-establishment political parties globally have renewed the debate on populism. While economic hardship and demographic shifts fuel populism, success depends on a perceived threat to national identity. Canada's lack of strong nationhood, consolidated multiculturalism, subdued class politics, and the decline of anti-Americanism hinder both left and right-wing populist electoral success at the national level.
