This work investigates the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on communication behavior within the WhatsApp mobile instant messaging application. Analysis of 2577 private chat histories (25,378,093 messages from 51,973 users) reveals significant short-term and long-term effects. Short-term effects included increased message frequency and shifted daily communication activity. Long-term effects showed a shift towards more regular messaging and persistent changes in daily activity patterns. The findings highlight the potential of anonymized chat data for behavioral research and network adaptation strategies during pandemics.
