NPY-mediated synaptic plasticity in the extended amygdala prioritizes feeding during starvation

S. Dodt, N. V. Widdershooven, et al.

Fasting reshapes hypothalamic circuits: the orexigenic peptide NPY drives input-specific synaptic plasticity in the BNST—strengthening AgRP (hunger) GABAergic inputs while weakening CeA (anxiety-related) inputs—to shift the balance toward feeding. These adaptations, evoked by AgRP neuron activation, are absent in NPY-deficient mice, linking NPY to coordinated changes in hunger and anxiety during starvation.
