Abstract

This study investigates the association between neighborhood social disadvantage and COVID-19 infection rates, mortality, and social distancing capacity in NYC during spring 2020. Using a combination of census data, NYC open data, and SARS-CoV-2 testing data, the researchers developed a ZIP code-level COVID-19 inequity index. They found a positive association between neighborhood disadvantage and infections, adjusting for testing rates. Subway usage data served as a proxy for social distancing capacity, showing lower capacity in higher disadvantage areas. The index also correlated with COVID-19 mortality.
