Abstract

This study investigates the systemic nature of SARS-CoV-2 infections by comparing its virus-human protein-protein interaction (PPI) network with those of 92 other viruses using statistical physics and computational biology. The researchers show that SARS-CoV-2 exhibits similarities to viruses like Influenza A and Human Respiratory Syncytial viruses, but also unexpected similarities to viruses from distant families such as HIV1 and Human Herpes virus. This multiscale analysis reveals COVID-19 as a systemic disease with potential effects on multiple organs and human body subsystems.
