Abstract

This article investigates whether China's urbanization patterns over the past two decades have led to a more balanced or increasingly polarized city size distribution. Using built-up area (BUA) expansion data across 23 urban agglomerations, the study finds that while internal polarization within agglomerations decreased, overall polarization between coastal and inland agglomerations increased. Coastal agglomerations maintained high growth rates, while policies aimed at balanced development showed partial success but did not fully counteract the uneven growth.
