Abstract

Africa is experiencing significant biodiversity loss due to environmental changes, impacting socioeconomic development and livelihoods. Data deficiency, budget constraints, and insufficient capacity hinder effective policy design and implementation. This paper reviews challenges with biodiversity data (availability, quality, usability, and database access), evaluating drivers of ecosystem change and biodiversity loss. It emphasizes the need for monitoring programs focusing on biodiversity-ecosystem linkages to inform evidence-based decisions in ecosystem conservation and restoration.
