Abstract
This study investigated factors that could protect adolescents’ autonomous motivation during COVID-19 home-based learning. Using mindset theory and self-determination theory, the researchers examined how mindset, school burnout, and three basic psychological needs (autonomy, relatedness, competence) predicted changes in autonomous motivation. Results from Dutch adolescents and their parents showed that a growth mindset was positively associated with autonomous motivation during school closures, while school burnout was negatively associated. Perceived parental autonomy support also positively related to autonomous motivation. The findings highlight the importance of personal and family factors in supporting adolescents' motivation during home-based learning.
