Abstract
The certification of entanglement dimensionality is crucial to characterize quantum systems. Recent results show that correlations from high-dimensional states can be simulated by sequential operations on lower-dimensional systems, which may undermine standard characterization protocols. The authors introduce irreducible entanglement to denote dimensionality that cannot be decomposed into sequences of lower-dimensional entangled systems, and prove this feature can be detected measurement-device-independently via an entanglement witness protocol. They experimentally apply the method to a two-qutrit state and certify irreducible (at least) 3-dimensional entanglement.
