Abstract
Extreme temperatures, exacerbated by climate change, threaten global rice production. This study investigates whether manure amendment, a common agricultural practice, mitigates the negative effects of extreme temperatures on rice yield. Through field experiments, pot experiments, and meta-analysis, the research demonstrates that long-term manure amendment significantly reduces rice yield losses caused by extreme temperatures. This reduction is attributed to increased soil fertility, leading to higher net photosynthetic rates and enhanced plant physiological resistance to temperature stress. The study estimates that manure amendment could potentially reduce global rice yield losses due to extreme temperatures from 33.6% to 25.1%.
