Abstract

This study investigated whether low self-esteem affects the formation of self-performance estimates in non-social contexts. Young adults (N=57) with either high or low self-esteem performed perceptual decision-making tasks with or without feedback. While objective performance was similar between groups, low self-esteem participants consistently underestimated their performance in subjective ratings. This suggests a potential domain-general bias in self-belief formation related to low self-esteem.
