Abstract
This longitudinal cross-sectional study examined motives for and perceived gains from leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) in 105 physically active individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). The most common motives were health and fitness improvements, appearance and weight management, and illness avoidance. The most common gains included improved health, fitness, strength, endurance, nimbleness, enjoyment, and revitalization. While health enhancement was a significant motivator, psychosocial aspects like affiliation and revitalization also influenced LTPA engagement. The study recommends encouraging regular LTPA for its health benefits and emphasizing its role in reducing illness, facilitating affiliation, and managing stress.
