This study investigated the joint association between objectively measured physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) volume and intensity with body fatness in a population-based sample of middle-aged British adults. Using data from the Fenland study (11,468 participants), the researchers found a significant inverse association between PAEE and body fatness in both men and women. Beyond total PAEE, higher proportions of vigorous-intensity activity were associated with lower body fatness. However, the contribution of intensity was marginal compared to the overall volume of PAEE. The findings support current physical activity guidelines emphasizing the benefits of any movement, rather than focusing solely on specific intensity or duration targets.
