Abstract
This study examines the impact of European Emission Control Areas (ECAs) and international maritime regulations on sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the North and Baltic Seas. Analysis of over 110,000 ship plume measurements, inspection results, and satellite data (2018-2022) reveals higher sulfur emission compliance near ports than in open waters. However, NOx emissions increased over the past three years, highlighting the need for improved emission regulations to enhance air quality.
