Abstract

This research investigated the intelligibility of English spoken by college students from the Bashu dialect region of Southwest China to an international audience. Using a phonetic experimental methodology with 40 intermediate English-proficient students, the study found that while the Bashu dialect influenced pronunciation, their English remained generally intelligible to a global audience. Pronunciation challenges included phonetic sounds, mispronunciations, and variations in accent and prosody. The study offers strategies to improve intelligibility for Chinese learners from dialect-specific regions.
