This randomized experiment (158 undergraduate women majoring in geoscience) identifies critical elements for successful mentorship programs aimed at improving women's motivation and persistence in STEM careers. The study finds that a combination of three factors is crucial: inspiration (exposure to female role models), inoculation (training on networking and overcoming obstacles), and introduction to a local female geoscientist mentor. These elements, working together, significantly increase mentoring, motivation, and persistence.
