This article explores how funding conditions affect research by examining the Swedish Distinguished Professor Grant (DPG), an individual excellence funding instrument. Using the concept of "protected space," the study, based on interviews with DPG recipients, reveals that the grant promotes autonomy in epistemic, strategic, and temporal areas. However, this autonomy is influenced by researcher characteristics and their environment. Enacting a "protected space" with the DPG requires a constant balance of investments and adjustments in different priority areas.
