Abstract
This research investigated the impact of COVID-19 school closures on the phonemic awareness of first-grade primary school students. Two cohorts (59 and 193 students) were compared using a researcher-designed Phonemic Awareness Test. Mediation analysis revealed that school closures significantly decreased phonemic awareness, and this effect was not mediated by socioeconomic status or family size. The findings are discussed in the context of student-teacher interactions.
