Abstract
This study uses Cobarrubias’ (1983) taxonomy of language ideologies to examine the ideologies underlying language policy and planning (LPP) in the Philippines. It analyzes mandated LPP from the Spanish colonial period to the present, revealing that linguistic assimilation has historically been the dominant ideology, though other ideologies like vernacularization, linguistic pluralism, and internationalization have also been present. The study highlights the coexistence of multiple ideologies within a single policy and suggests implications for other multilingual, postcolonial countries.
